Expert Tips: Swimsuits to Avoid This Summer and Stylish Alternatives to Consider

Experts Reveal Swimsuits to Avoid This Summer — and Which to Wear Instead

Fashion pros weigh in on what styles are worth investing in and which trends are worth skipping.

Before you splurge on the latest swimwear fad, consider these words of wisdom from fashion experts.

Fit is Everything

The first and most important tip when shopping for a new suit? Choose one that actually fits. “The styles that tend to be the least flattering are the ones that don’t fit you properly,” says Alissa Bristow, vice president of creative and design at LSPACE. “Whether it’s straps that dig, too-tight waistbands or bottoms that cut into your hips, ill-fitting suits can distract from your shape and make you feel uncomfortable.”

Think Twice About Strapless Styles

“Some bandeau styles can be tricky unless they’re carefully designed,” says Zoë Scharf Schulze, Vice President of Marketing at Miraclesuit. “A flattering swimsuit should feel secure and supportive without the need for constant readjusting.” If you have your heart set on a strapless design, Schulze advises going with one that has built-in bra and silicone lining to help things stay in place. Optional straps are also a plus to help you feel more secure when you’re walking around or taking a swim.

Be Wary of Boy Shorts

Yes, it’s counterintuitive, but more material doesn’t mean a more flattering fit. “Choosing bottoms that are too large or have excess fabric can create a fuller appearance, often the opposite of what you’re aiming for. Less is more, especially in bottoms,” explains Luli Hanimian, head designer at Luli Fama. Sarah Heaton, head of product at boohoo agrees, adding, “Boy shorts can shorten the leg visually. If that’s not the vibe, go for our high-cut styles instead, which are super flattering.”

Avoid Busy Designs

“I find that solid colors are often more flattering than prints,” says Stefania Frangista, owner and lead designer of her eponymous swimwear label, “especially in one-pieces. And stay away from swimsuits that are too embellished or have too many cuts or strings. The simpler the better!”
